During my sophomore year at Pace University, I was searching for internships when I came across Jonathan Heisler, a New York proposal photographer. Applying was one of the best decisions I’ve made. Jonathan gave me the opportunity to learn from one of the best in the city, and those years shaped the way I photograph today.
Here’s some of what New York taught me.
Directing people who aren’t models
Most couples I photograph have never stood in front of a professional camera, and on proposal day the nerves are real, especially for the guys. Once I had a groom-to-be who was so nervous he opened the ring box facing himself instead of his partner. Moments like that are part of the magic, but they also taught me how important it is to quietly guide people. My job is to help a nervous partner and a surprised fiancée feel relaxed and look completely natural, so the photos look like them on their best day.
Reading light anywhere
In New York you don’t get to choose your conditions. One day it’s golden hour in DUMBO, the next it’s a crowded street in Midtown. The weather is unpredictable, especially in April, so I often shot proposals in the rain with umbrellas. I learned to find good light wherever we were and to make the weather part of the story instead of fighting it.
“Alex is so thoughtful, creative, and passionate about photography. Whether it is helping people with posing or understanding where the light is, her photos clearly convey her expertise.”

Coming home
Now I’m back in Bratislava and Vienna, bringing something that’s huge in New York but almost unheard of here: dedicated proposal photography. As far as I know, I’m the first photographer in Bratislava focused on proposals, and I’d love to make it a tradition here too.
I say it to people all the time: it’s a true honor to be there for one of the most special moments of someone’s life. And honestly, it’s such a lovely job. I get to spend my days with happy people who are deeply in love.
Let’s work together
I’m now booking:
- Proposals: from planning the perfect spot to capturing the moment they say yes
- Engagement sessions
- Couples shoots: classic or creative
- Family sessions
If you’re planning a proposal or want photos you’ll treasure, get in touch. I’d love to hear your story.
